Slot machines have been in Deadwood almost since its beginning. Built in square wooden cabinets and sporting colorful hand-painted wheels, these turn-of-the-century gaming machines looked more like carnival games. These gambling contraptions were a big part of Deadwood gaming until the 1940s, when federal agents raided the town and burned them in a public square.
